BMW Milestones: A 2011 Retrospective

Call us nostalgic, but at the end of every year, BMW of the Main Line, likes to sit down together and talk about all of the notable milestones BMW hit over the course of the past 12 months. Not only is a way to reminisce over those "remember-that" moments; it helps us a gauge how high to raise the bar in the New Year. Like previous gatherings, BMW of the Main Line thoroughly enjoyed looking back at 2011. For, the year was filled with a LOT of newsworthy events. Which, as you can imagine, fueled quite a lively conversation.
Rather than bore you with each and every milestone, we've decided to highlight those we think you'll appreciate most - and if you missed, you'll be thankful to know. When it comes to new models, BMW introduced three. First, there was the all-new 6 Series Convertible and Coup with available x-Drive all-wheel drive. Then, there was the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. And finally, BMW's first pure EV: the ActiveE. Needless to say, the industry welcomed them all with open arms.
Beyond models, a few key events took place surrounding where BMW vehicles are made. Specifically, BMW worked to expand their U.S. facility in South Carolina. Now open, it produces the BMW X3, BMW X5 and BMW X6 for markets worldwide. And, to support their efforts to integrate more vehicles across the new BMW lineup with lightweight, performance-enhancing, efficiency-improving carbon fiber, the Bavarian automaker joined forces with SGL Group to open a collaborative carbon-fiber manufacturing plant in Washington. It's there that carbon fiber for the forthcoming BMW i3 and BMW i8 will be produced.
Last, but certainly not least, BMW entered a few very key partnerships in 2011. In addition to collaborating with SGL Group, they joined forces with the U.S. Olympic Team. Via the BMW Performance Team, BMW was then able to offer assistance to 11 Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls. And, to help ignited interest in dialogue on ways to enhance urban life, the German automaker helped kick off the BMW mobile Guggenheim Lab in NYC.
As you can see, it's been a pretty eventful year. And, we don't know about you, but by taking just a brief moment to share in this retrospective makes us all the more proud to drive BMW. It's more than a car. It's a brand backed by thoughtful philosophy and a tenacious spirit that tirelessly pursues perfection. It goes without saying, the bar for next year...well, it's pretty darn high. But, we're certain BMW up for meeting the challenge.
